Algarve
The Algarve is one of Europe’s most inviting cycling destinations. Tucked into the southern tip of Portugal, it blends wild Atlantic coastline with rolling inland hills and rugged mountain ranges. You can ride quiet roads past dramatic cliffs, whitewashed villages, and orange groves under a sky that’s almost always blue.
What makes the Algarve special is the variety. One day you can spin along the coast, tracing golden beaches and fishing towns. The next, you can head inland and test your legs in the Serra de Monchique or Serra do Caldeirão. These low mountains offer steady climbs, big views, and quiet roads with barely a car in sight.
The weather is one of the Algarve’s biggest perks. It’s sunny nearly all year, with mild winters and long, dry summers. Even in the cooler months, daytime riding is comfortable and you’ll rarely need more than a light layer. Rain is rare, and the wind is usually manageable, especially inland.
Whether you're out for a short spin or a full-day challenge, you’ll never be far from a place to stop. The region is full of cyclist-friendly cafés, bakeries, and small restaurants where you can grab a coffee, a pastel de nata (traditional Portuguese pastry), or a fresh seafood lunch. Many places welcome riders with open arms and good espresso.
The Algarve is made for riding. It has smooth roads, a growing cycling culture, and terrain that suits every kind of rider. It’s perfect for solo adventurers, training camps, or relaxed tours with friends.

Best time to ride
Riding in the Algarve works year-round, but spring and autumn are where it really shines. From March through June, then again from September into November, you get warm, steady weather, plenty of daylight, and calm roads.
Winter, from December to February, is also a good option, especially if you’re coming from somewhere cold. With average daytime temperatures of 17–19°C, mild sunshine, and generally rideable conditions, it’s a popular time for road cyclists and training camps, though you should expect cooler mornings and the occasional rain shower.
Summer’s a bring high temperatures and the coast gets busy with tourists. Riding is still possible, but to avoid the midday sun it’s best to set out early in the morning.
